Senior Jordan Larsen spent the beginning of her summer out at the Sanford Research Center for the Sanford Promise Scholars internship. Starting in June, the program lasted eight weeks and participants were expected to put in 35 hours of lab work per week at the center in Sioux Falls. Larsen originally found out about the internship through an e-mail from her cousin who works at Sanford. Only seven South Dakota high school students were accepted and the application process had multiple parts. “You have to send in a transcript and they want you to have a strong interest in Biomedical Science for a career. I wrote a couple of essays about why [I was] interested in that career field and I had to get recommendation letters from teachers,” said Larsen.

An average day in the lab for Larsen started at 7 a.m. and ended at 3 p.m. “We got assigned a P.I. which stands for Principal Investigator, so they have their own research lab. The lab I was working in works on pediatric brain tumors. So, when I got there in the morning, I would usually go straight to the lab,” said Larsen. “Sometimes I would shadow what the lab members were doing for the day and help them out. Other times, they would give me tasks to do. I would collect DNA from mice and run it through PCR, pretty much DNA test them.” Twice a week the high school interns would also attend classes where they learned about other research techniques they did not have a chance to practice in the lab.

In addition to the P.I.’s and the high school interns, Larsen worked with undergraduate students who were working towards Ph.D.’s in Biomedical Science. “There was a huge age difference,” said Larsen.

Overall, Larsen felt that the experience was worth it. “The reason why I wanted to do it [was to] see if I really wanted to be a researcher,” said Larsen. After the internship, she decided it wasn’t the path she wanted to pursue, but thought it was still beneficial because it helped her decide to look into different careers instead. “I’m thinking maybe a medical doctor, so possibly med. school. My top choice is University of North Carolina, they have a really good medical program,” said Larsen.
